Coming off an appearance
in a Class 1A regional championship game, the Salt Fork Storm
must replace a number of their top players from a season ago.
The co-op, consisting of Catlin and (Sidell) Jamaica, finished
23-5 last season. The Storm fell in the regional title game to
(Hume) Shiloh. Of their five losses all season, two were to Shiloh
(their first and last loss).
Brittany Hoag (5'6"
Sr. Guard) is the lone starter back for Salt Fork. "Great
defensive player, runs the floor very well, leading scorer in
the regional championship game last year," coach David Ellars
said. Newcomers that will crack the lineup are, Tingley Jones
(5'8" Sr. Post), Heather Baker (6'0" Jr. Post), Maddison
Strutsman (5'6" Jr. Guard), and Megan McCord (5'8" Jr.
Guard/Post). Strutsman is dangerous from the outside, and made
it to the sectionals of the three-point shooting contest a year
ago.
Salt Fork finished
10-2 last year in the Vermillion County Conference, taking second
place. "Our goal is to compete for the conference title every
year," Ellars said. The Storm look to be competitive outside
of the conference as well. "We have a very competitive schedule.
We have added 2A and 3A teams to our schedule. We play in the
(Champaign) St. Thomas More Thanksgiving Tournament and in the
Bismarck-Henning tournament over Christmas. Our goal is to win
the Vermillion County Conference and (conference) tournament."
David Ellars is in
his second year as head coach at Salt Fork. He served as an assistant
coach at Tolono Unity for ten seasons.
Jamaica has a very
succesful resume in girl's basketball, with a pair of state final
appearances. The team took second place in Class A in 1979-80.
That team finished 23-2 under coach Mary Hannig. They had seven
regional championships during the 1990's, including a trip to
the Elite Eight (1994-95), and also a sectional championship (1993-94).
Dawn Eakle coached the team from 1992-93 through 1995-96, picking
up 105 wins against only 11 losses in those four seasons.
