One part experience
and one part depth is certainly not a secret in the recipe for
success. Momence will have both parts for the 2009-10 season,
as the Redskins will get a boost from a pair of players that missed
all or most of last year with injuries.
"We have depth
that we did not have last year. Much more experienced group at
the varsity level with only one senior lost to graduation,"
coach Kris Holloway says. A year ago, the Redskins missed both
Kaylie Kinstner (5'11" Center) for most of the season with
an injury, while Emily Siwicki (5'8" Forward) was lost for
the entire year due to an ACL tear.
Four starters are back
for Momence, including first-team Sangamon Valley All-Conference
selection Jordan Kinstner (5'10" Forward/Guard). Dani Anthony
(5'7" Forward) was named to the Kankakee Daily Journal All-Area
team. Other starters returning will be, Krystal Meyer (5'6"
Guard) and Jessica Spoon (5'4" Guard).
Newcomers to the Redskins
varsity will be, Chelsea Simpson (5'4" Guard), and Ebony
Hughey (6'0" Center), along with Kinstner and Siwicki who
return from their injuries. "Last year we played in a regional
championship, this year looking to win the ninth regional for
the school."
Momence finished (5-3)
in the Sangamon Valley Conference last season. "(Sangamon
Valley) looks to be very strong this year. We hope to finish with
a better conference record than last year." The Redskins
will compete against Clifton Central, Paxton-Buckley-Loda, Watseka,
Tri-Point, Champaign St. Thomas More, St. Joseph-Ogden, Iroquois
West, and CPCI in the conference.
Kris Holloway is in
stint number two as head coach at Momence. Holloway led the Redskins
to a (185-137) record from (1990-2003). The second started last
year, when Momence finished (14-15). During a 14-year coaching
career, Holloway has a career record of (199-152). Holloway turned
the Momence program around in the mid-1990's. From (1990-91 to
1993-94) the Redskins went (10-73), and turned around to win 20+
games in five of seven seasons, from (1996-97 to 2002-03).
The Redskins have won
eight regional championships, four of them under Holloway (1997-98,
1998-99, 2000-01, & 2002-03). Momence won a sectional title
in (2006-07) under coach Molly Grasha. That team finished (28-2).
