The Hersey Huskies
finished the 2008-09 campaign with a 23-9 overall record and advanced
to a Class 4A sectional semifinal. From that team, a good number
of returning players are back for coach Mary Fendley.
Megan Rogowski (5'9"
Jr. Guard) earned several accolades, including a third-team selection
to the IBCA All-State team. She was also an All-Area and All-Conference
pick as a sophomore. Julia Fredian (5'9" Sr. Point Guard)
was also an All-Conference selection in the Mid-Suburban League.
Fredian is also an All-Area soccer player, a goalie at Hersey.
Other returning starters
for the Huskies will be Maddie Swan (6'1" Sr. Center), a
three-sport standout that also excels in volleyball and soccer.
Rounding out the returnees is Kathryn Korff (6'1" Sr. Forward),
and Eileen Zydek (5'9" Jr. Forward).
Newcomers that will
see some minutes this winter will be, Annie Perkins (5'7"
Sr. Guard), Kari Tunney (5'8" Jr. Guard), and Brittany Pittas
(5'8" Jr. Guard). Pittas transferred to Hersey from Crystal
Lake.
Wheeling will be Hersey's
top competition in the East division of the Mid-Suburban League.
Wheeling finished third in Class 4A last season. "Wheeling
will be tough again, but hopefully we can get them this year.
I think that we are the second best team in the MSL (including
the West). (Hersey) hope to advance further than last year,"
coach Mary Fendley said.
Fendley has 222 career
wins heading into the 2009-10 season. She has spent 11 seasons
at Hersey. She has led the Huskies to seven regional championships
during her tenure.
Hersey has won 12 regional
titles in school history, with the first coming in 1979-80. The
Huskies won a sectional championship in 1993-94. That year, the
team finished 27-2 under head coach Linda Mass.
