A solid group of seniors
was lost to graduation at B-PC/A following the 2008-09 season.
The Spartans finished the year with a 13-19 record, but pulled
off an appearance in a Class 1A regional championship at Abingdon.
The Spartans played
a strong schedule, as they compete in one of the best 1A conferences
in the state, the Prairieland. "We played a very tough schedule
playing seven games involving state-ranked teams. Only losing
to the fourth place team in the state (1A) Brimfield by seven
points, Class 2A runner-up West Hancock by ten points, and Prairieland
Conference power Havana by one," coach Julie Blout said.
A trio of seniors that
moved on will be participating in athletics at the collegiate
level. "Stacie Jones is walking on (Western Illinois) track
team as a thrower, could have played basketball somewhere but
her true love is track. Shelby McAvoy playing softball at St.
Ambrose. Gabrielle Lorton playing basketball at Carl Sandburg
College." Another loss hit the Spartans, but not by graduation.
"We will greatly miss Morgan King, who started for the Lady
Spartans as a guard last year, she has moved to Texas."
Returning for B-PC/A
will be just two starters, a pair of juniors. Bridjet Blout (5'9"
Jr. Forward) and Kendra Pierce (5'6" Jr. Guard) have both
started since they were freshmen. "Blout may only be 5'9"
but plays tough in the paint rebounding and scoring and can shoot
from the perimeter if needed, along with being a good team leader
and role model." Blout was a first-team all-conference selection
in the Prairieland, along with being named All-Area by the Macomb
Journal. She averaged 11.2 points/game, 10.1 rebounds/game, 1.5
steals/game, 1.4 assists/game, and 1.3 blocks/game. In her career,
Blout has scored 596 points and pulled down 556 rebounds.
Pierce may actually
be faster dribbling a basketball, then sprinting empty-handed.
She can create offense for the Spartans with her in-your-face
defense. "(Pierce) has great speed, right to left movement
and awesome dribbling skills, she may be the fastest guard with
a ball that I have seen. She can score on the move and the perimeter."
Pierce was also a first-team all-conference pick and all-area
selection. During her sophomore season, she averaged 14.1 points/game,
4.0 steals/game, 3.1 rebounds/game, and 1.9 assists/game. Pierce
should reach the 1,000 point mark at some point this season. She
has 734 points through her two seasons, in addition to 200 steals
and 138 assists.
Carley Foster (5'5'
Sr. Guard) returns to the varsity after contributing as a junior.
"(Blout and Pierce) plan to incorporate Foster along with
the newcomers with their winning attitude and hustle." Foster
averaged 1.9 points/game and 1.1 rebounds/game. "(Foster)
has put a lot of work in the gym this summer, has shown great
improvement, is dedicated to our program and is a true TEAM leader."
Moving up to the varsity
this season will be, Jordyn Van Tine (5'7" Jr. Guard), Sam
Wells (5'3" Jr. Guard), Jesse Riden (5'6" Jr. Guard),
Sarah Reihm (5'4" So. Guard), and Courtney Admire (5'4"
So. Guard). "These players (guards) have great speed to add
to the team." Down low, Sierra Van Tine (5'7" Jr. Post),
Kaitlin Akers (5'7" Jr. Post), Emily Simmons (5'9" Jr.
Post), and Abby Stier (5'7" So. Post). "They may not
be very tall, but they play the paint well and have good speed
for post players." The Spartans could see additional depth.
"We also have a couple of Avon foreign exchange students
and a past player that moved back into the B-PC school district
that are interested in playing."
Numbers are starting
to increase at all levels of the Spartans program. "We have
good incoming numbers at the freshman level with approximately
ten players that show great dedication to the basketball program,
along with sophomores Emily Hudson, Santana Duckwiler, and Rachael
Groutage. B-PC/A is starting to get good numbers at each grade
level and believe this will start the beginning of a good basketball
program."
B-PC/A is banking a
lot on their team speed, an asset that is plentiful for the Spartans
this season. "The team put in a lot of hard work in open
gym this summer working with Dr. Kris Wakefield on a speed and
strength training program. He noticed great improvement in all
players. Most of all the players were very dedicated and work
hard in the off time on their basketball skills and conditioning.
Putting in all of this work will definitely contribute to the
success of the basketball season. The core of the team has common
goals and that is what we are gonna work for and make the communities
of Avon and B-PC proud of the Lady Spartans basketball program."
The Prairieland Conference
boasts one of the strongest contingent of teams in Class 1A. B-PC/A
will have its work cut out for them night in and night out in
the league. "The conference is loaded. Brimfield coach (Jim)
Blane is returning his whole team. Havana coach (Jerry) Wilson
is losing a couple of great seniors but bringing back a team that
had a bench ten deep. Abingdon, B-PC/A, North Fulton, South Fulton
and newcomer to the conference Knoxville will not let anyone down
without a fight. Elmwood is rebuilding but looks like they have
some talent coming up. Think it would be pretty hard for anyone
to figure out how this is going to turn out. It is just going
to be great Prairieland Conference basketball again this year,"
Blout said of the conference outlook.
The Spartans are looking
to improve on their 13-19 record from a season ago and push that
record above .500 in 2009-10. "The Lady Spartans plan to
have a winning season in this rebuilding year. Move through the
postseason to the level that all of our hard work, dedication,
and talent will take us. Every team should have the same goal
of being the state champs. If you do not make goals, they are
hard to reach." Julie Blout enters her third season as head
coach of the Spartans.
The last postseason
title came in the 1994-95 season for the B-PC Spartans. Current
Metamora coach Kathy Wainman led that team. The Spartans finished
25-5 in 1993-94, advancing to a supersectional that season. B-PC
finished fourth in Class A in the 1983-84 season, going 28-3 under
Cindy Arthur. Arthur won 119 games at B-PC, from 1979-80 to 1986-87.
