The Seton Academy Sting
stung their competition on the way to a Class 2A state championship
last season. Coach Ken Stevenson's crew dismantled the field at
Carver Arena in Peoria, defeating Winnebago (83-58) in the semifinals,
and downed Massac County (83-63) in the title game.
Last year's championship
marked the first of any kind at the South Holland-based school.
The Sting finished the season at 31-2. The team's only losses
came at the hands of (Chicago) Hyde Park (69-60) and Chicago Leo
(65-61). Seton Academy won the South division of the Chicago Catholic
League, going a perfect 7-0.
Lost from last year's
squad are three players who have gone on to play college basketball.
Leading the charge a year ago was D.J. Cooper, who was named the
Class 2A Player of the Year, along with a host of other All-State,
All-Conference, and All-Area teams. Cooper has moved on to Ohio
University. The Sting's second Division-One player was Tony Nixon,
an IBCA All-Stater who is at Northern Illinois. Another leader
from last year's state championship team was Jordan Walker, an
IBCA All-Stater who is now at Midland College. Corbin Thomas was
also an IBCA All-State mention, who is now at Southwestern College.
It will be very hard
for Seton Academy to repeat last year's performance with the losses
of quality talent. Five players are back that saw significant
time last season. Kenny Stevenson (6'2" Sr. Guard) averaged
5.3 points/game and dished out 91 assists. Stevenson was a Catholic
League Honorable Mention and IBCA All-State Honorable Mention.
Khameron Harper (6'3" Sr. Guard) is back after averaging
around 6 points/game and 2 rebounds/game. Tavares Ingram (6'2"
Sr. Guard) averaged 1.4 points and 1 rebound/game. Kendall Lett
(6'4' Sr. Forward) averaged 3.5 points/game and nearly 2 rebounds/game.
The big man at Seton Academy will be Chris Olivier (6'7"
Sr. Forward). Olivier averaged more than 4 points/game and over
2 rebounds/game.
Newcomers to the varsity
will be, Aszante Hawkins (5'10" Jr. Guard) and Rashad Jacob
(5'9" Jr. Guard). "We will not be 31-2 like we were
last season, but we will be a good team this year," coach
Ken Stevenson said.
Ken Stevenson is in
his seventh season as head coach at Seton Academy. Stevenson led
the Sting to a Regional championship during the 2007-08 season.
