Mercer County vs. Clifton Central (2012 Class 2A Semifinals)

2013 Preview
The Mercer County Golden Eagles were perfect in 2012, winning all 14 games. Mercer County won the IHSA Class 2A state championship, beating Belleville Althoff. Only seven starters return for the Golden Eagles in 2013, but plenty of talent is back.

"Good solid bunch of kids with great experience behind them - lots of unproven talent," coach Nat Zunkel said.

Four all-conference players are back, but the Golden Eagles must replace nearly every skill position. Tyson Nylin returns at a wide receiver. He caught 32 passes for 593 yards last season. Tyson Russell rushed for 252 yards out of the backfield.

Mercer County has been a perennial favorite in the Lincoln Trail Conference. The Golden Eagles should once again contend for the league championship in 2013. "Championship will be between Mercer County, Stark County, and Annawan/Wethersfield. Mid-County will be a dark horse," Zunkel said.

Head Coach
Nat Zunkel enters his seventh year as a head coach (44-13). He was also a head coach at Mattoon. Zunkel played college football at Illinois Wesleyan.

Assistant Coaches
Brian Dennison, Brian Adams, Dustin Murray, Eric Russell, Bill Osmun, Austin Skiles, and Luke Boucher.
